Ada Berner was born in
Martinsburg, Neb. to William and Alma Schaefer. She was
the second child but the first daughter of four
siblings. She attended elementary school in a one-room
school house in both Martinsburg and later Rockwell City
Iowa, by her father who was not only the teacher but
also the pastor at Immanuel Lutheran church in
Rockwell City. She taught school a few years before
marrying Herbert Berner August 31, 1935. He was a pastor
and she stayed home to raise a family of five
children. As the children were growing up they heard
many "momisms" from her, but one of the favorite was
when we'd ask if she knew where our lost "item"
(shoes, backpacks, etc.) were, she'd reply, Yeah,
hanging on my ears. Today she is living in a retirement
home in Milwaukee, Wisc. She has 16 grandchildren and 9
great-grandchildren.
